WAVERLY — Waterloo East opened its boys’ basketball season with a challenging game at Waverly-Shell Rock, but the Trojans were up to the task Tuesday, 77-68.

Waverly-Shell Rock, ranked ninth in Class 3A, led 44-43 at halftime before East surged to a 59-55 lead after three quarters and closed it out down the stretch.

Tyrese Nickelson had a big game for the Trojans with 33 points, including four 3-point baskets. Treyshawn LaBeaux chipped in a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds.

The Go-Hawks got 26 points from Luke Velky.

CEDAR RAPIDS PRAIRIE 59, WATERLOO WEST 26: Waterloo West struggled to find any offensive rhythm as the Wahawks fell at Cedar Rapids Prairie in a Mississippi Valley Conference game. Prairie (2-0, 1-0) led just 11-7 after one quarter, then outscored West (1-1, 0-1) 48-19 over the final three quarters.

CEDAR RAPIDS KENNEDY 74, WATERLOO EAST 46: Cedar Rapids Kennedy was too much for Waterloo East in a Mississippi Valley Conference game Tuesday.

Kennedy used a 24-point second quarter to pull away.

Waterloo East was led offensively by Kerris Roberts with 18 points and Amanee Clark with 14 points and three 3-pointers.

Wrestling

EAST DROPS PAIR: Waterloo East fell to Linn-Mar and Iowa City West to open the 2017-18 dual wrestling season Tuesday.

The host Iowa City Trojans used five forfeits and four pins to claim a 60-18 win over East in the first match. Antonio Rodriguez (152) and Brayden Good (120) had pins for East.

In a 48-28 loss to Linn-Mar, East again gave up 30 points due to forfeit. Aidan Ernst won by pin at 138 while Rodriguez won by injury default.

CEDAR RAPIDS KENNEDY 110, WATERLOO 59: Tate Hookham won the 50- and 100-yard freestyles to lead Waterloo Swim in a dual loss to Cedar Rapids Kennedy.

IOWA CITY WEST 89, CEDAR FALLS 80: Cedar Falls won five events but lost a close dual meet to Iowa City West in its season-opener Tuesday.

Dylan Moffatt won the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle, Jared Mattson took the 50 freestyle, Benson Redfern claimed the 100 backstroke and the team of Mattson, Sam Reinart, Eamonn McCullough and Redfern touched first in the 400 freestyle relay.
