CEDAR FALLS — For eight minutes Friday night, Waterloo West held its own against a powerful Cedar Falls girls’ basketball squad.

The second-ranked Tigers decided that was long enough.

Leading 14-6 after the opening eight minutes, Cedar Falls outscored the Wahawks 21-2 in the second period and cruised to their 18th win in 19 games, 62-21.

“I think we got off to a hot start, and that was good,” Tigers coach Gregg Groen said of his team’s 14-1 beginning. “Then West got into a bit of a flow there closing out the period, but our girls responded very well.

“West always comes here very well-prepared and you can never overlook them. We played better on defense in the second quarter and things started to fall our way.”

With the Tigers saying farewell to four seniors on this night, it was freshman Anaya Barney and sophomore Emerson Green who caused the most damage. Green poured in 23 points and Barney added a dozen.

“When you go against a good rival like West you have to come out strong,” Green said. “We came out hard from the start and had a little fire under us and we had to get after it. We knew that West never gives up and we had to not let up.”

The Tigers kept the pedal down in the second half as they outscored the Wahawks 27-13.

“We are such a deep team and when we sub players in, the flow never stops,” added Green.

The Wahawks had their moments as junior Jada Draine muscled her way inside for nine points and sophomore Lauren Conrey orchestrated a patient offense to start the game. On the other hand, Cedar Falls held West’s leading scorer, Na’Tracia Ceaser, to two points.

“They got us in that second period,” Wahawks coach Tony Pappas said. “It was a bad night either way you look at it.”
