HUDSON — Waterloo Columbus rode its pressure defense and efficient fourth-quarter free throw shooting to a 59-43 North Iowa Cedar League win over Hudson Friday.

The Sailors took a 24-14 halftime lead, and used a variety of presses and traps to stretch their advantage to 13 before finishing off the Pirates from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.

“The kids played great and with a lot of energy and passion. Their effort was just awesome,” said Columbus head coach Cory O’Brien, who chalked up his first win as the Sailors’ head coach.

Grace Surma led Columbus with 17 points and Kiki Cabrera added 14.

LINN-MAR 57, WATERLOO WEST 46: After three back-and-forth quarters, Linn-Mar charged past Waterloo West over the final eight minutes for a 57-46 girls’ basketball victory in a matchup of Top 15 teams.

The No. 11 Lions, who hit nine 3-point goals in the game, outscored the No. 13 Wahawks 20-5 in the fourth quarter to nail down their first win of the season.

Na’Tracia Ceaser led West with 18 points.

DUBUQUE SENIOR 60, WATERLOO EAST 58: Waterloo East just missed its second win in as many nights as Dubuque Senior held off the Trojans 60-58 in a Mississippi Valley Conference matchup.

Kerris Roberts poured in 30 points and Taleigha Watson 14 for the Trojans.

HUDSON 71, COLUMBUS 66: Hudson fought off Waterloo Columbus down the stretch to secure a 71-66 North Iowa Cedar League boys’ basketball win Friday.

Alex Zike hit four first half 3-pointers on his way to 16 points to lead the Sailors while Parker Ingamells led the victorious Pirates with 25 points.
