GRUNDY CENTER — Eighth-ranked Grundy Center surged ahead at the end of the third quarter and held off Aplington-Parkersburg 53-42 Friday night in a Class 2A girls’ regional basketball semifinal.

Aplington-Parkersburg, which finished its season 14-8, led 18-17 at halftime and the game was tied 28-28 with a minute to go in the third quarter before Grundy Center went on a 7-2 run to take a lead it didn’t give up.

The Spartans hit 12 of 17 free throws in the fourth quarter and got a double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds from Hailey Wallis.

Grundy Center will take a 15-game winning streak into Monday’s regional final against Pekin in LeGrand. Pekin, ranked 13th, knocked out Pella Christian Friday, 45-37.

DIKE-NEW HARTFORD 52, CENTRAL SPRINGS 45: Ninth-ranked Dike-New Hartford got a big game from Ellie Foster and advanced to a regional final showdown against top-ranked North Linn.

Foster poured in 29 points for the Wolverines (22-2), who led just 20-17 at halftime but took control in the third period. Baylee Petersenhad seven rebounds, Morgan Weber had six rebounds and Katie Knock had four assists for D-NH, which tied the school record for wins in a season.

The Wolverines take a 14-game winning streak into Monday’s go-to-state game in Jesup against top-ranked and unbeaten North Linn.

Class 1A

JANESVILLE 56, IOWA VALLEY 14: Janesville left no doubt in its regional semifinal against Iowa Valley, pitching a first-quarter shutout and bolting to a 40-5 halftime lead.

Briana Baker-Bruce had 14 points, eight assists and eight steals for the 14th-ranked Wildcats (21-2), who earned a matchup against top-rated Springville in Monday’s regional final. Springville defeated Marquette Catholic 48-23.
