DES MOINES — Kyle Johnson singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift Akron-Westfield to a 5-4 win over Lisbon Saturday in the Class 1A state baseball quarterfinals at Principal Park.
With the game tied 3-3 after nine innings, Lisbon (31-6) scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th on a passed ball before Akron-Westfield (32-2) loaded the bases ahead of Johnson’s clutch two-out hit.
Akron-Westfield starting pitcher Austin Allard went 7 2/3 innings before reaching his pitch count. He allowed five hits and two earned runs while striking out 11 Lisbon batters.
The Westerners overcame seven errors on the day. They advanced to face Martensdale-St. Mary’s in Thursday’s semifinals.
