WATERLOO — Waterloo Columbus and Union each used a big inning to find a win as they split a North Iowa Cedar League baseball doubleheader Friday night at Columbus High School.

Union tallied seven runs in the fourth inning and won the opener, 9-3, before Columbus plated all five of its runs in the fifth inning of the Sailors’ game two victory, 5-1.

Anthony Kiler earned the complete game victory for Union in addition to recording a double and three RBIs.

Columbus’ Lucas Benda pitched a two-hitter with the lone run of his complete game two victory unearned. Benda also doubled with an RBI. Henry Walters finished with two RBIs for Columbus in the opener.

CEDAR RAPIDS XAVIER 13-13, WATERLOO WEST 2-3: Xavier pulled away with seventh total runs in the sixth and seventh inning of game one before recording multiple runs in four of the seven innings in game two of Friday’s Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader sweep at Waterloo West.

Xavier leadoff hitter Gabe Lux led the Saints by finishing the doubleheader 4-for-7 with six runs scored.

CEDAR RAPIDS KENNEDY 12-11, WATERLOO EAST 2-1: Kennedy cranked out 17 hits and swept Waterloo East during Friday’s Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader in Cedar Rapids.

The Cougars were paced by pitcher and shortstop Parker Cooley who finished 4-for-7 with three runs scored and three RBIs over the two games.


SAILORS SPLIT IN SPENCER: Waterloo Columbus showed it can compete with the state’s elite as the Sailors went 1-1 during a pair of competitive games at Friday’s Spencer Invitational.

Class 2A’s No. 6 Columbus defeated 2A’s No. 2 North Union 4-3, and dropped a game against Class 3A’s No. 3 Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley by that same 4-3 margin.

Sydney Schultz and Alivia Schultz combined for three hits and three RBIs during the Sailors’ win over North Union. Jalila Hart also drove in a run with a single.

Columbus answered North Union’s game-tying run in the top of the sixth with a go-ahead tally in the bottom of the frame. Kayla Sproul struck out five and walked none, scattering five hits in the win.

Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley took a 3-2 lead with a pair of fifth inning runs during its narrow win over Columbus. The Sailors cut the deficit to one in the seventh before coming up just short.

Maliyah Little drove in two runs to leads the Columbus offense.
