WAVERLY — Thanks to a big fourth inning rally, Waverly-Shell Rock took down conference rival Decorah 6-5 in a seesaw Class 3A Substate 3, District 5 final Monday night.

Things picked up in the second inning with the Vikings scoring twice on an RBI double by Dustin Meyer and a Waverly-Shell Rock error before the Go-Hawks scratched one back in the bottom half of the inning.

Down 3-1, Go-Hawks put together an eleven-batter, five-run fourth, highlighted by Kayden Dewey double and multiple Viking errors.

“They turned what should have been outs into runs by inept defense on our part,” said Decorah head coach Dennis Olijiniczak.

Decorah managed three runs to put the pressure back on Waverly-Shell Rock closer John Stensland in the final inning.

The Go-Hawks managed the first two outs with ease but made an error and gave up a single before senior catcher Hunter Destival called a mound conference.

“Hunter called time and said we needed to calm down and get this last out and that we were going to move on to Wednesday,” said Stensland.

The Go-Hawks did just as their catcher predicted, securing the final out to advance to a Substate 3 face off with Dubuque Wahlert.

Despite his team committing five errors, W-SR Coach Casey Klunder found a silver lining.

“It shows the adversity we have to be able to overcome five errors and still grab a win,” he said.

After dropping two of three against Decorah during the year, the Go-Hawks continued an on-going theme of their substate run.

“These playoffs are a bit of a redemption tour for us,” said Klunder. “We came back after falling to Cresco earlier this year then tonight we beat Decorah who had took two of three from us, we get them. Now, we have to get back at Wahlert for beating us last year.”

The Go-Hawks face Wahlert Wednesday at Hertel field in Waverly, hoping to reserve their seat in the Class 3A state field.
