CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Six University of Northern Iowa wrestlers advanced to the semifinal round of the Southern Scuffle tournament Monday.

Jay Schwarm (125 pounds), Josh Alber (141), Bryce Steiert (165), Taylor Lujan (174), Drew Foster (184) and Jacob Holschlag (197) made it through the opening day undefeated.

Max Thomsen (149) and Logan Ryan (157) can still finish as high as third place.

Overall, UNI went 30-16 on the day with 18 victories by bonus points. The Panthers trail only Penn State in the team standings, 101-81.5. Lehigh is third with 68 points.

Schwarm pinned both of his opponents Monday. Alber recorded a forfeit, a 7-4 decision and a 16-3 major decision. Thomsen won his first two matches before a 3-2 loss to Josh Heil of Campbell in the quarterfinals.

Ryan had a pin in his first match before an 8-3 loss to Paul Fox of Stanford. He rebounded with a pair of decisions to stay alive.

Steiert’s day included a first-period pin, a major decision and an 8-1 decision, Lujan had a pair of technical falls and a 4-0 win, Foster dominated three foes with two technical falls and a pin, and Holschlag had a technical fall, a 5-3 decision and an 11-1 major.

The tournament concludes Tuesday.
