AMES — Northern Iowa had six champions at Saturday’s season-opening Harold Nichols Open wrestling tournament.
Jay Schwarm (125 pounds), Taylor Lujan (174) and Carter Isley (285) won titles in the Open Division, while Jack Skudlarcyzk (133), Triston Lara (149) and pat Schoenfelder (165) were champions in the Freshman/Sophomore Division.
UNI led all teams at the tournament in falls with 13. Isley had three of them in a combined 8 minutes, 18 seconds, then knocked off 2017 NCAA qualifier and former Waterloo West state champion Marcus Harrington 3-2 in the title match.
Other top finishes for the Panthers in the Open Division came from Dan Kelly (second), Isaiah Patton (third), Izaak Shedenhelm (third), Jack Wagner (fourth) and Bryce Steiert (fourth). In the Freshman/Sophomore Division, Austin Yant was second, Keaton Geerts third and Jay Schipper and Chase Lienhard fourth.
Iowa State also won three Open Division weight classes with Ian Parker winning at 133, Gavin DeWitt at 149 and Chase Straw at 157. Kristian Vasquez and Kaden Sauer won Freshman/Sophomore crowns for the Cyclones.
WARTBURG 45, NEBRASKA WESLEYAN 0: Top-ranked Wartburg kicked off its season with a 45-0 rout of Nebraska Wesleyan Saturday. It was the 197th straight Iowa Conference dual win for the Knights.
Connor Cleveland (125 pounds), Brennen Doebel (133), Logan Thomsen (157) and Lance Evans (285) recorded pins while Brock Rathbun (141), Cross Cannone (149) and Trevor McLaughlin posted technical falls.
