NORMAL, Ill. — Northern Iowa surrendered just 12 second-half points and capped a weekend Missouri Valley Conference road sweep with a 58-36 victory at Illinois State Sunday.

The Panthers (10-10, 6-3) held the Redbirds (8-12, 2-7) to 21 percent shooting in the second half (4-for-19) to take control of a game that was tied 24-24 at halftime. Illinois State’s 36 points were a season low for the UNI defense.

For the game, UNI allowed 31 percent shooting overall, 9.1 percent shooting from 3-point range (1-for-11), forced 25 turnovers and had 13 steals and five blocked shots. Mikaela Morgan and Ellie Howell had four steals each, while Taylor Hagen blocked four shots.

The Panthers, who were winless in MVC road games heading into the weekend, held the edge in nearly every statistical category. UNI had more points in the paint (24-20), more points off turnovers (25-16), more second-chance points (15-5) and more bench points (22-13).

Kennedy Kirkpatrick’s 12 points led the Panthers while Howell finished with 10. Nicole Kroeger and Hagen added nine each off the bench.

UNI returns home to the McLeod Center to host Missouri State Friday and Southern Illinois Sunday.
