ORLANDO, Fla. — Northern Iowa played suffocating defense and handed Wyoming its first loss of the season, 55-40, Saturday in the opening round of the Central Florida Invitational.

The Panthers’ efforts included a 47-29 rebounding advantage and they gave the Cowgirls (4-1) just two offensive rebounds and no second-chance points. In addition, UNI (2-2) held Wyoming to 0-for-8 shooting from 3-point range and 32.7 percent overall.

After building a 27-23 halftime lead, the Panthers outscored the Cowgirls 29-17 in the second half.

Mikaela Morgan led UNI’s offense with 15 points and Megan Maas added 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

The Panthers face host Central Florida Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

IOWA 74, ELON 61: Iowa captured the Puerto Rico Challenge and reached 7-0 for the first time since 2010 Saturday with a 74-61 win over Elon in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The Hawkeyes led 33-23 at halftime and limited Elon to 30.3 percent shooting with a 3-for-21 performance from 3-point range.

Megan Gustafson had 20 points and 14 rebounds for Iowa, but Alexis Sevillian was the Hawkeyes’ leading scorer with 21 points, including a 5-for-6 game from behind the arc. Iowa had 25 assists on 31 baskets, led by seven from Kathleen Doyle and six from Tania Davis.

CENTRAL MICHIGAN 81, IOWA STATE 60: Central Michigan had a hot hand from the 3-point arc and shot down Iowa State 81-60 Saturday in the title game of the Junkanoo Jam, in Bimini, Bahamas.

The Chippewas (4-1) hit 58 percent from 3-point range, going 14-for-24.

Iowa State (3-2) grabbed a 13-4 lead with some hot shooting of its own early, but Central Michigan surged ahead in the second quarter and stretched its lead to 16 points after three periods.

Bridget Carleton led the Cyclones with 19 points while Emily Durr added 12 points, five rebounds and four assists. Both Carleton and Durr were named to the all-tournament team.
