TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Northern Iowa weathered a late Indiana State rally to post a 56-46 Missouri Valley Conference women’s basketball win on the road Friday.

The Panthers (12-11, 8-4) swung the game in their favor with a big run of their own in the second quarter when they outscored the Sycamores (8-14, 6-5) 21-6. The game was tied 17-17 early in the period before UNI held Indiana State to just three points over the final 8:14 of the half to surge in front, 33-20.

UNI stretched its lead to 39-20 with the first two baskets of the third quarter before the Sycamores finally broke their scoring drought at the 5:08 mark.

Indiana State went on a 15-3 run from there to pull within 42-35 after three periods, then inched within 47-44 on a three-point play followed by a free throw with 2:34 remaining.

UNI got a big bucket from Kennedy Kirkpatrick to make it 49-44 with 1:45 left, then hit 7 of 8 free throws in the final 1:19 to complete a regular-season sweep of the Sycamores.

Kirkpatrick finished with 18 points to lead the Panthers, Megan Maahs recorded a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Ellie Howell added 11 points.

UNI was hurt by 20 turnovers and nine blocked shots by Indiana State, but offset that by holding the Sycamores to 28.6 percent shooting overall and just 3-for-15 from 3-point range.

The Panthers play at Evansville today at 1 p.m.
