CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois made a late surge in overtime to defeat Northern Iowa 60-53 Friday night in a matchup of Missouri Valley Conference co-leaders.

The Salukis (3-0, 8-6) broke a 53-53 tie in overtime on Makenzie Silvey’s 3-point basket with 1:26 on the clock and the Panthers (2-1, 6-8) were unable to score the rest of the way.

It was a back-and-forth battle from the outset. UNI built a 20-15 lead midway through the second quarter, but Southern led 22-20 at halftime.

UNI shot just 23.3 percent in the first two periods, including an 0-for-10 half from 3-point range.

The Salukis stretched their lead to five points early in the third quarter. UNI came back to go up 32-31, but Southern held a 37-36 edge heading into the fourth.

The Panthers then pulled out to five-point leads at 45-40 and 47-42 before Southern drew even at 47-47 and it was tied at 49 at the end of regulation.

Rose Simon-Ressler finished with 16 points, Megan Maahs had a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds, and Ellie Howell chipped in 10 points for UNI, which was hurt by 17 turnovers and 1-for-19 shooting from 3-point range.
