BROOKINGS, S.D — A rough shooting night dropped the Northern Iowa women’s basketball team to 2-4, as the Panthers fell 57-47 to South Dakota State Thursday night.

UNI hit just 7-of-22 from the field in the first half and fell into a nine-point halftime hole after being outscored 18-9 in the second period.

The Panther offense finally found a spark in the third quarter. After the Jacks pushed their lead as high as 15 early in the period, UNI responded with a 13-0 run to get within two.

But they would get no closer, as SDSU eventually closed things out at the foul line.

Free throws proved to be the biggest factor in the outcome. While both teams shot 18-of-60 from the floor, South Dakota State got to the line 20 times with 17 makes, while the Panthers made just 7-of-9 free throw attempts.

UNI was called for 24 fouls, while South Dakota State was whistled for just 11.

Megan Maahs led UNI with 15 points and tied Kennedy Kirkpatrick with a team-best seven rebounds.

Four games through a six-game road trip, the Panthers travel to face North Dakota at 2 p.m. Saturday.
