OMAHA, Neb. — Northern Iowa fought from behind most of the night, and the Panthers never got over the hump as they dropped a 78-74 women’s college basketball game at Nebraska-Omaha.

It was the fourth consecutive defeat for UNI (2-6), which was without one of its top players in Ellie Howell. Omaha improved to 7-2.

Nebraska-Omaha led 19-13 after the first period and 43-32 at halftime. UNI then scored the first 10 points of the second half to get within a point and the game went back-and-forth the rest of the quarter with the Mavericks taking a 58-56 lead into the final period.

The Panthers tied the game at 58-58 on a jumper by Abby Gerrits with 9:48 remaining before suffering through a fateful stretch of 5 minutes, 11 seconds. UNI missed six shots, turned the ball over six times and didn’t score over that stretch as Omaha surged to a 71-58 lead.

Karli Rucker stopped the drought with a 3-pointer and the Panthers got within 76-74, but the Mavericks held on for the win.

Rose Simon-Ressler led UNI with 18 points while Megan Maahs added 11 points and nine rebounds.
