CEDAR FALLS — Northern Iowa’s 25th-ranked volleyball team made quick work of struggling Loyola Friday night at the McLeod Center, sweeping the Ramblers in just over an hour.
Set scores were 25-9, 25-9, 25-18.
The Panthers (19-5 overall, 9-1 Missouri Valley Conference) cruised through the first two sets. UNI used a 10-0 run and hit .414 in the first set, then hit .545 in the second game while pulling away from a 5-5 tie with seven straight points.
Loyola (1-19, 0-9) regrouped before the third set and led by as many as three points before the Panthers turned things around. UNI drew even at 16-16 on a Piper Thomas kill and went up 17-16 on block by Thomas and Karlie Taylor. Bri Weber followed with a kill and a service ace for a 19-16 lead the Panthers didn’t give up
Taylor finished with 12 kills, seven digs and four blocks, Thomas had 11 kills, hit .744 and led UNI with five blocks. Weber chipped in nine kills and eight digs, Heather Hook had 32 assists, two service aces and six digs, and Kendyl Sorge and Taylor Hedges had 10 digs apiece.
UNI hit .379 for the match with 43 kills and 10 errors in 87 attempts while the Ramblers hit .132 with 22 kills and 22 errors in 90 attacks.
The Panthers host Valparaiso Saturday at 7 p.m.
