AUSTIN, Texas — University of Northern Iowa standout Brandon Carnes raced into the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field national championships in one event and set a school record in another Friday at the NCAA West Preliminary meet.
Carnes clocked 10.02 in the 100-meter dash to place fourth overall and earn a place at nationals in Eugene, Oregon. He also ran a 20.25 in the 200 to break his own UNI record of 20.50 and erase the previous Missouri Valley Conference record of 20.36 held by Indiana State’s Dwight Williams since 1984.
Carnes advanced to the 200-meter quarterfinals Saturday, while Jon Rus moved on to the 100-meter hurdle quarterfinals. Rus advanced with a time of 14.03.
