TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Anna Bentley won the javelin and the University of Northern Iowa women’s team assumed the first-day lead Friday at the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Bentley, a junior, posted a season-best mark of 140 feet, 1 inch for her victory.
The Panthers scored big in the hammer throw with Sarah Pate taking second at 202-7, Alanna Nietert fourth (190-7), Maddy O’Brien sixth (188-1) and Allison Griffin eighth (179-8).
UNI also got points from Lauren Beauchamp (third place, 12-1.25) and Sam Fisher (seventh, 11-7.25) in the pole vault and from McKayla Cole (third, 36:31.85) and Gabby Champion (seventh, 37:36.33) in the 10,000 meters.
The Panthers’ team score of 45.50 points was good for a 17-point edge over Illinois State.
UNI was tied for third in the men’s competition behind Indiana State and Southern Illinois.
Issac Holtz took fourth in the hammer (184-11) and Kyler Yodts fifth (175-4), while Darius King was third in the javelin (175-11) and Cade Kirkpatrick eighth (159-11).
