Three former Northeast Iowa high school basketball standouts who joined forces at Missouri Western State University will be inducted into the Missouri Western State Hall of Fame Oct. 20-21.
Dave Weber, who played at Dunkerton, former NU High star Tony Bender and Brian Graves of Dike were part of a 1981-82 Missouri Western team that went 25-7 overall, won the CSIC title and won the NAIA District 16 championship.
Matej Blumel of the Waterloo Black Hawks has committed to play college hockey at Connecticut after spending two seasons with Waterloo.
Blumel, a native of the Czech Republic, scored his first United States Hockey League goal Oct. 13 at Dubuque.
Swimming and diving
Northern Iowa’s Molly Lembezeder and Izzy Bunchek were named the Missouri Valley Conference swimmer and diver of the week, respectively, on Tuesday.
Lembezeder won three individual events and three relays in dual meets against Nebraska and Sioux Falls last weekend, while Bunchek qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships against Sioux Falls.
The University of Northern Iowa’s 14th annual Women at Play event is set for Jan. 20 at the Waterloo Center for the Arts.
The annual celebrate of Panther women’s athletics begins at 6:30 p.m. and includes a silent auction, social hour, hors d’oeuvres, live auction and specialty games.
A panel if guests including host Jacqui Kalin and Missouri Valley Conference senior associate commissioner Patty Viverito will also take part as UNI helps celebrate the 25th anniversary of women’s athletics in the MVC.
This year’s Pat Allen Women at Play scholarships will be presented to Kelsey Hansen (soccer) and Molly Lembezeder (swimming).
