IOWA CITY — The University of Northern Iowa women’s swimming and diving team got off to a strong start Wednesday night at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships at the University of Iowa’s pool.
The Panthers’ 200 medley relay of Katie Taylor, Autumn Roepsch, Crystal Florman and Molly Lembezeder swam a school-record 1:41.11 and finished second to Missouri State’s MVC-record performance of 1:39.30.
UNI added a third-place finish in the 4x200 freestyle relay with the group of Taylor, Lembezeder, Aftin Phyfe and Rachel Siebenaller. They touched the wall in 7:22.20 in an event won by Southern Illinois in 7:19.71. Taylor set a UNI record of 1:50.44 in her 200 split just minutes after Crystal Florman broke the old mark with her 200 of 1:51.12.
Missouri State leads the team standings after the opening night with 74 points. Southern Illinois is second with 72 and UNI third with 66. Action continues Thursday.
