ORLANDO, Fla. — Northern Iowa used stellar pitching and just enough hitting Friday to win both its games on the opening day of the Diamond 9 Orange Blossom Classic.
Brooke Craig scattered four hits and didn’t walk anyone in a 2-1 walk-off victory over Quinnipiac to start the day. Jaclyn Spencer followed with a seven-strikeout performance in an 11-0, five-inning rout of Central Florida.
UNI and Quinnipiac were tied in the bottom of the seventh when Brittney Roby singled home Courtney Krodinger to end it.
Against Central Florida, Spencer staked the Panthers to a 2-0 lead with a two-run home run and it was 4-0 after three before UNI erupted for seven runs in the top of the fifth.
Two of those fifth-inning runs scored on bases-loaded walks, one on a hit batter with the sacks packed and another on a wild pitch. Sammey Bunch added a two-run single and Jenny Kohl knocked in a run with a single.
Now 6-1 overall, UNI plays George Washington at 1:30 p.m. and Kennesaw State at 4 p.m. Saturday.
