SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Northern Iowa shut down state rival Drake 2-0 Friday to earn a spot in the Missouri Valley Conference women’s soccer tournament championship match.
The Panthers (14-4-1) avenged a 2-1 regular-season loss to the top-seeded Bulldogs (13-4-2) in Des Moines and will play Missouri State Sunday at 1 p.m. for the tourney title and an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Brynell Yount scored both UNI goals, giving her a school record 11 for the season. She knocked in a rebound of her own shot in the 30th minute, then turned a Morgan Teel assist into a 2-0 lead just eight minutes later.
The Panther defense did the rest. Jami Reichenberger made 10 saves in goal on the way to her MVC record 11th shutout of the season. She broke a mark that had stood since 2003.
“I couldn’t be more proud of the girls this season,” said UNI head coach Bruce Erickson. “I thought we stuck with the game plan and had one of the best performances of the season.”
Missouri State shut out Loyola, 1-0, in Friday’s second semifinal. The Bears defeated UNI by that same score during a regular-season matchup in Springfield, Mo.
