CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — University of Northern Iowa redshirt freshman Chris Olivier is no longer a member of the Panther men’s basketball team, the university announced Wednesday.
Olivier, a Chicago and Quakerdale Prep product, plans to transfer and will enroll at another institution for the second semester, according to a two-paragraph release.
Attempts to reach head coach Ben Jacobson Wednesday evening were not successful.
The 6-foot-8 Olivier had played just 16 minutes, scoring five points with four rebounds and two turnovers in UNI’s season-opener against Wartburg.
He did not make the trip to the Bahamas for the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament with the Panthers.
“Some things that Chris needs to do differently, better — in terms of his approach to some things. That’s the bottom line,” Jacobson said at the time. “Chris is still a member of our basketball team. It isn’t anything he’s done in terms of any sort of trouble of any kind. Nothing to do with any of that. We’re working on Chris making some better decisions and doing some things better.”
Olivier was on the bench but did not play in home games against Milwaukee and Northern Colorado, but he did not make the trips to George Mason, to Des Moines for the Big 4 Classic against Iowa or to UNLV. Then he was absent for Sunday’s home game against St. Mary’s at the McLeod Center.
Until Wednesday, Jacobson had said Olivier’s status as a member of the team had not changed when questioned about the issue.
