Jake Ryczek of the Waterloo Black Hawks was named the USHL’s CCM Defenseman of the Week Monday.

Ryczek contributed four points and played a key role on the blue line as Waterloo won three games last week. It’s the second time in seven weeks since joining the Black Hawks that Ryczek has been honored by the league.

Basketball

University of Northern Iowa men’s basketball head coach Ben Jacobson will host a series of camps for both individuals and teams in June.

Team Camp I for freshmen through varsity players is June 11-12. Day Camp for players entering grades 1-8 is June 13-16. Advanced Camp for those in grades 9-12 is June 24 and team Camp II for freshman through varsity players is June 25-26.

The Cedar Valley CourtKings minor league basketball franchise has added Waterloo attorney Matt Craft to its roster.

Craft, 37, played high school basketball at Union High in La Porte City before attending college at Iowa State where he went through walk-on tryouts.

The CourtKings open their inaugural season April 23 in Chicago. Their home opener is Sunday, May 15 at the Cedar Valley SportsPlex in Waterloo.

Outdoors

The Cedar Valley Walleye Club will host the 13th annual Family Day fishing event Saturday in conjunction with the Department of Natural Resources’ trout stocking at North Prairie Lake in Cedar Falls.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the first 50 kids receive tackle boxes, prizes will be awarded and hot dogs, chips and refreshments will be served for as long as they last. The event, which is also sponsored by Scheels Sporting Goods, the Cedar Falls Parks Department and the Cedar Falls City Council, is free and open to the public.

The 29th annual Cedar River Canoe Float is set for June 11-15.

The float begins at Otranto Park just south of the Minnesota border and concludes near Janesville. Camping is available at each stop along the way. Participants can take part if any or all of the float. No registration is required.

Football

The East Iowa Storm semi-pro football team is holding a public meet and greet April 23 at the old high school field in Independence.

Fans are invited to meet the Storm coaches and players and watch a live scrimmage, beginning at 3 p.m.

Volleyball

The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team has set the schedule for its spring event Saturday, April 16 at the Wellness/Recreation Center on the UNI campus.

Kansas State, Iowa State, Iowa, Northern Illinois, Nebraska-Omaha, North Dakota State and South Dakota will join the Panthers for a day of volleyball matches beginning at 9 a.m. Seating is limited, but fans are encouraged to bring their own chairs. Admission is free.

UNI will play Kansas State at 9 a.m., Nebraska-Omaha at 10 a.m., Iowa State at 11 a.m., North Dakota State at 12:45 p.m., Iowa at 1:45 p.m., and split its squad to face South Dakota and Nebraska-Omaha at 2:45 p.m.

Bowling

Cedar Falls High bowling standout Brandon Jerome will sign a national letter of intent Friday at Maple Lanes to compete for Grand View College in Des Moines.

Jerome was a four-year varsity letterwinner for the Tigers, an Elite Team all-stater and a two-time all-Mississippi Valley Conference first-team performer. He averaged 224 this past season, fifth-best in the state, and led Cedar Falls to its first state championship.

Swimming/diving

The University of Northern Iowa placed 12 student-athletes on the Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete team announced Tuesday.

The Panthers, who put together a record-setting season in the pool, are represented by Sarah Kemp, Taylor Ostrowski, Aftin Phyfe, Stephanie Jackson, Veronica Herrmann, Jill Georgen, Autumn Roepsch, Hannah Brummel, Meredith Gorman, Molly Lembezeder, Olivia Knowles and Lauren Pentzien.

Wrestling

The University of Northern Iowa’s 2016 wrestling banquet is April 23 at the McLeod Center.

The banquet is open to the public and begins with social hour at 5 p.m. followed by dinner and a program. Tickets are $15.
