NEWTON, Kan. — Northern Iowa improved its opening day score by 24 strokes and move up a spot to sixth Monday after the second round of the Missouri Valley Conference women’s golf championship.

Missouri State takes a three-shot lead over Southern Illinois into Tuesday’s final 18 holes. UNI is at 616.

Paige VanDyk carded a career-best 70 that included five birdies Monday to lead the Panther squad. Hannah Bermel shot a collegiate-best 73 and Sarah McMichael a 74.

McMichael is tied for 14th overall at 153, seven shots behind leader Frankie Saban of Bradley.
