• Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier sportswriter Jim Nelson is the 2018 recipient of the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association's annual Presidents Award.

The honor recognizes an individual who has made an impact on the sport as either a participant, coach or promotor.

Nelson joins a list of 26 previous recipients since 1996 that includes Dan Gable, Bob Siddens, Steve Knipp, Jim Gibbons, Mike Chapman, Dan Mashek, Bill Roth and Jim Miller.


  • Waterloo Black Hawks forward Jack Drury was named United States Hockey League Forward of the Week Monday.

Drury had three big goals and a key assist as Waterloo defeated Chicago, Green Bay and Cedar Rapids last week.

Drury's first goal against Cedar Rapids made it a record 22 straight games in which he has contributed at least one goal or one assist. That's the longest streak since the USHL became a Tier I league 16 years ago.


  • The University of Northern Iowa has set its spring football game for Friday, April 27 in the UNI-Dome.

Admission to the 6 p.m. scrimmage is free. The Panthers begin their 15 spring workouts March 26.
