• University of Northern Iowa senior linebacker Jared Farley has been named to the watch list for the Buck Buchanan Award presented annually to the top defensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision.

Farley, who is tied for ninth nationally in tackles per game at 11.2 and has one interception and a fumble recovery for a touchdown, will try to follow in the footsteps of Panther Karter Schult, who won the award last season.

Track and field

  • University of Northern Iowa freshman Jessica Heims has been named Female High School Athlete of the Year and an All-American by U.S. Paralympics.

The Swisher native competed in the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio and earned gold and bronze medals at the World Para Athletics Junior Championships in Switzerland.


  • Northern Iowa's Gisela Kemper and Reghan Lynch were defeated in their opening singles matches Thursday at the ITA Central Regional in Lawrence, Kansas.

Kemper fell to Marinia Guinart of Oklahoma State 6-0, 6-1, while Lynch lost to AnneMarie Emme of Minnesota 6-2, 6-4. Both players continue action in the consolation bracket Friday.

Walleye fishing

  • Cedar Falls' Doug Bonwell and his uncle Lynn Bonwell of Lansing won the final Cedar Valley Walleye Club tournament of the season last weekend on the Mississippi River at Prairie du Chien, Wis.

Facing rapidly rising water and diminishing water clarity, the Bonwells finished with six fish over the two-day event for 11.05 pounds. Waterloo's Tim Ahrens and Tom Ahrens were second with six fish for 9.64 pounds, and Brett Ridgers and Rodney Blackwell took third with four fish for 9.31 pounds. Jim Dengler and Darrell Kinkade had the big fish of the tournament with an 8.45-pounder and finished fifth.

Jeff Heltibridle and Darwin Heltibridle earned Team of the Year honors and qualified for next year's Cabela's National Team Championship in May on the Mississippi River at Moline, Ill. The Bonwells also qualified.
