University of Northern Iowa sophomore Maddie Lesjak has been named Missouri Valley Conference goalkeeper of the week for the second straight week.

Lesjak recorded back-to-back shutouts as the Panthers defeated Missouri State, 1-0, and Viterbo, 2-0. She improved to 5-1 on the season.

Cross country

Northern Iowa’s Ashley Norem was named Missouri Valley Conference Female Cross Country Athlete of the Week Tuesday.

Norem, a junior from Urbandale, finished fourth at the University of Wisconsin’s Badger Invitational to lead UNI to a second-place team finish. Norem’s 21:59.60 was her second-fastest 6K ever and the best in the MVC this season.


The Midwest Basketball League champion Cedar Valley CourtKings will hold an open tryout Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Cedar Valley Boys and Girls Club at 515 Lime St. in Waterloo.

Interested players can register between 1:30 and 2 p.m. The cost to try out is $50. Of the 15 players on last season’s roster, 10 made the team through open tryouts.

Glynns Creek Golf Course head professional John Valliere has been named the 2016 Iowa PGA Golf Professional of the Year by the Iowa PGA Section.

Other awards went to Grant Feilmann of Wakonda Country Club (assistant pro of the year), Mark Egly of the Des Moines Driving Range (teach of the year), Jim Webb of Tournament Club of Iowa (youth player development award), Carol Nitzschke-Henrich of Warrior Run Golf Course (Patriot Award), Greg Mason of Spirit Hollow Golf Course (Strausbaugh Award), Jerry Johnson (Horton Smith Award), Sean McCarty of Brown Deer Golf Course (player development award), Dustin Toner of Cedar Rapids Country Club (merchandiser of the year—private), Greg Dingel of Veenker Memorial Golf Course (merchandiser of the year—public), Allan Miller of Spirit Hollow (merchandiser of the year—resort), Colby Marriott of NB Golf Cars (sales rep of the year) and Dave Brostrom (Distinguished Service Award).
