CONWAY, S.C. — Donovan Jackson scored 26 points, Nick Weiler-Babb added 23 with seven assists, and Iowa State got its first win after an 0-2 start by beating Appalachian State 104-98 in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off Thursday.
Defense was in short supply in the matchup, as the Cyclones surrendered 32 points to both Ronshad Shabazz and Justin Forrest, as the Mountaineers connected on 15 3-point shots.
But Iowa State, which failed to crack 60 in either of its first two games, nearly reached that total in the second half alone. Five different Cyclones scored in double figures.
Cameron Lard came off the bench to record a double-double, putting in 12 points while grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds. Lard also blocked three shots.
The Cyclones advance to the second round of the tournament this evening, where they will take on Tulsa at 6 p.m. CST.
