IOWA CITY | If nothing else, the Iowa basketball team got in some good free throw practice Sunday.

In truth, head coach Fran McCaffery thought his club got much more than that out of an 87-65 victory over Augustana College (Ill.) in a preseason exhibition game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Hawkeyes took almost as many shots from the foul line as they did from the field, but had to genuinely exert themselves to hold off the energized Vikings. And McCaffery didn’t figure that was a bad thing.

“I knew what we were going to get from this team the day we scheduled this game,’’ he said. “We got outplayed. We won the game, but we were substantially outplayed today by that team. I think it's exactly what our team needed today. I think we needed to get outfought, to get outplayed. We needed a team that was going to force us into some mistakes.’’

Needless to say, Augustana coach Grey Giovanine liked what he got out of the rare experience of taking his team into a Division I setting.

“I couldn’t be prouder of our team,’’ Giovanine said. “We come into a Big Ten Arena where there’s 15,000 people and I thought we went toe-to-toe and really competed hard."

The Vikings actually held the lead a couple of times early in the game, at 5-4 and 7-6, and never backed off, even after the Hawkeyes began to assemble a lead. Augie finished the game on an 8-0 run.

Giovanine said he thought Iowa held a 22-0 lead in its exhibition game against Division II Quincy University last year.

“I love the fact that we were not intimidated,’’ he added. “It showed the moxie and toughness of our team and I think it will serve us very well as we go forward.’’

McCaffery wasn’t completely disappointed with everything and everybody.

Aaron White and Zach McCabe led the Hawkeyes with 16 points apiece and sophomore Adam Woodbury collected 10 points and 11 rebounds.

“I thought Woodbury was terrific,’’ McCaffery said. “Aaron White was terrific. Zach McCabe, spectacular.’’

As a team, the Hawkeyes made only 2 of 18 attempts from beyond the arc.

More than anything, they just didn’t play as hard as they will need to when they open the regular season Friday night against UNC-Wilmington.

“At the beginning of the game we were very lackadaisical,’’ McCabe said. “We didn’t get out on transition, we didn’t play good defense, we weren’t pressuring. It’s just something our team needs to work on. Our season is coming up. We need to change our attitude because it’s not where it needs to be.’’

One thing they did do well: Shoot free throws.

With the officiating crew conforming to new NCAA guidelines restricting the use of hands on defense, Augustana was whistled for 33 fouls, sending Iowa to the free throw line 50 times. They made 39 of them. That was the difference in the game as the two teams made the exact same number of field goals.

“If we had kept them off the foul line it might have really been a fun game,’’ Giovanine said. “Other than that, I just couldn’t have been prouder with the way our guys competed.’’

NOTE: Sophomore guard Anthony Clemmons did not play for Iowa because of a sprained ankle suffered Friday in practice. McCaffery said he thought Clemmons would be ready to practice by Tuesday and will be ready for Friday’s regular-season opener.
