FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Third-ranked Augsburg rode a pair of pins to a 21-17 victory over top-ranked Wartburg Friday in the championship match of the Division III NWCA National Duals.
Wartburg got wins from top-ranked Cross Cannone, Logan Thomsen and Eric DeVos along with No. 2 Kyle Fank and unranked Bowen Wileman, but the Knights' only bonus point victories were Fank's technical fall and Wileman's major decision.
Cannone improved to 19-0 with his 9-2 win over sixth-ranked Alex Wilson, Thomsen remained unbeaten at 20-0 with a 7-4 decision, DeVos won his 23rd straight match dating back to last season with an 11-5 victory over seventh-ranked Tanner Vassar and Fank's technical fall was the 26th of his career, tying Gerard Roman for second-most in program history.
Wartburg topped Ithaca 32-15 to make the finals for the 17th straight year since the event began. The Knights have faced Augsburg for the title 12 times. The teams meet again Feb. 1 in Waverly for the annual Battle of the 'Burgs.
Tenth-ranked Upper Iowa finished seventh in the Division II tournament. The Peacocks dropped a 26-14 match to No. 13 Central Oklahoma in the consolation semifinals, then bounced back to defeat Colorado State-Pueblo, 26-15.
Josh Walker posted a technical fall in his 133-pound match against Central Oklahoma and a major decision against Pueblo. Hunter Slifka, Dalton Hahn and Nick Baumler won decisions for the Peacocks against Central Oklahoma.
Maleek Williams and Damian Penichet won decisions, Baumler had a major decision and Upper Iowa accepted a pair of forfeits against Pueblo.
