IOWA CITY — Iowa didn’t get caught in a trap.

A run of 14 unanswered points midway through the final two quarters Sunday allowed the Hawkeyes to pull away to an 80-59 women’s basketball victory over Samford at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

“Sandwiched between Florida State and Iowa State, I thought it was an easy game for the team to lose its attention, so we talked about that a lot leading up to the game in shootaround,’’ coach Lisa Bluder said.

The Hawkeyes opened a 38-28 lead after two quarters, a margin the Bulldogs cut to 54-47 on a jumper by Olivia Crozier with 3:35 left in the third quarter.

By the time Samford scored again at the 5:48 mark in the fourth quarter, Iowa had regained a 71-47 advantage.

The Hawkeyes scored off of three-of-four steals and found success pounding the ball inside repeatedly while limiting the Bulldogs (3-5) scoreless over a nearly eight-minute stretch to seize control of the game.

Megan Gustafson led Iowa (8-1) with her eighth double-double of the season, finishing with 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting to go with 11 rebounds.

Hannah Stewart added a career-high 17 points and Kathleen Doyle contributed 14 while teaming with Tania Davis for 13 of the 26 assists the Hawkeyes had on 30 made baskets in their final tune-up before a 7 p.m. game Wednesday at Iowa State.
