A: Some suggestions we found: Put the book in a sealed container or bag with some baking soda for a few hours; try putting sheets of newspaper between many of the pages and put it in a sealed container with more sheets of crumpled newsprint for three or four days; or try putting the book once again in a sealed bag and put it in the freezer for five-seven days, in hope of killing mold spores.

Q: Bottled water says either purified or spring water. Is one better than the other?

A: We’re not sure. Here’s what the EPA says: “Artesian water, ground water, spring water, well water — water from an underground aquifer which may or may not be treated. ... Spring water is collected as it flows to the surface or via a borehole. Purified water that originates from any source but has been treated to meet the U.S. Pharmacopeia definition of purified water. It is essentially free of all chemicals.”

Q: Why in the area of UnityPoint Health-Allen Hospital don’t we have any water pressure in the basement for showers and laundry since the Highway 63 flooded underneath the viaduct?

A: Those two things are not related. Flooding under the railroad on U.S. 63 is from ground water seepage around the viaduct. The water in your home comes from a closed, pressurized system of pipes after being pumped out of deep wells and treated. If you have concerns about water pressure at your home you should contact the Waterloo Water Works.
