A: Nobody has submitted plans to the city of Waterloo to construct a Sonic restaurant. There used to be a Sonic near there, at 42 Tower Park Drive, but it closed in 2012.

A: According to, “The # symbol is commonly called the pound sign, number sign and more recently the hashtag. It is called the pound sign because the symbol comes from the abbreviation for weight — lb, or ‘libra pondo,’ literally ‘pound by weight’ in Latin.” A hashtag is a type of metadata tag used on social networking sites like Twitter that allow people to follow a topic or event more easily. “Hashtag” was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2014.

A: Not exactly. According to fact-checking site, a 1927 New York Times article named Fred Trump among the individuals arrested after a “near-riot” involving the KKK and New York City policemen. The article did not say Fred Trump was a KKK supporter or that he was charged with a crime. Fred Trump was 21 years old at the time. Donald Trump wasn’t born until 1946.

Q: Does the Waterloo City Council believe the traffic cameras they are planning will bring more shoppers to Waterloo?

A: The cameras were approved to improve roadway safety. They were not designed to bring more shoppers to the city.

A: The Waterloo Engineering Department oversees public street right-of-way.

Q: Regarding the bike trail on Park Avenue, how will they work that this winter when there is snow? Where does someone park their car?

A: Bicycle lanes typically do not get a lot of use after a major snowfall. That said, the presence of snow does not change the bike lanes or parking locations.
