Q: Is there a Sonic restaurant being built on the corner San Marnan and Ansborough?

A: Nobody has submitted plans to the city of Waterloo to construct a Sonic restaurant. There used to be a Sonic near there, at 42 Tower Park Drive, but it closed in 2012.

Q: I think a team from Lufkin, Texas, was in the recent Little League championships. Is that city in the path of the hurricane? Where is it?

A: It’s about 120 miles northeast of Houston. The day this was called in, the city was under a flash flood watch and was expecting 4 to 6 inches of rain by Wednesday.

Q: In Cedar Falls is it legal to park the cab of a semi truck in front of a house on a residential street?

A: Public Safety Director Jeff Olson said: “The parking of large trucks is prohibited on most city streets by city ordinance. Please call police dispatch at 291-2515 with any suspected violations of this ordinance.”

Q: CMI bought the old Terex building in Waverly some time ago. Will they be hiring soon?

Q: Why do they call the pound sign a hashtag? And what does hashtag mean?

A: According to dictionary.com, “The # symbol is commonly called the pound sign, number sign and more recently the hashtag. It is called the pound sign because the symbol comes from the abbreviation for weight — lb, or ‘libra pondo,’ literally ‘pound by weight’ in Latin.” A hashtag is a type of metadata tag used on social networking sites like Twitter that allow people to follow a topic or event more easily. “Hashtag” was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2014.

Q: Is it true Trump and his father were once arrested at a KKK rally?

A: Not exactly. According to fact-checking site Snopes.com, a 1927 New York Times article named Fred Trump among the individuals arrested after a “near-riot” involving the KKK and New York City policemen. The article did not say Fred Trump was a KKK supporter or that he was charged with a crime. Fred Trump was 21 years old at the time. Donald Trump wasn’t born until 1946.

Q: Does the Waterloo City Council believe the traffic cameras they are planning will bring more shoppers to Waterloo?

A: The cameras were approved to improve roadway safety. They were not designed to bring more shoppers to the city.

Q: There has been a temporary barricade in front of a hole in front of the Papa Murphy’s on the corner of Ridgeway and Kimball. Who would I call at the city about this?

A: The Waterloo Engineering Department oversees public street right-of-way.

Q: Regarding the bike trail on Park Avenue, how will they work that this winter when there is snow? Where does someone park their car?

A: Bicycle lanes typically do not get a lot of use after a major snowfall. That said, the presence of snow does not change the bike lanes or parking locations.
