CEDAR FALLS —In reference to Kent Guild’s letter of Dec. 15 concerning his confusion about, “Me Too.” Sexual abuse is when a husky farm boy forces a young girl behind a furnace in the basement of a country school. Forces her arm behind her back so violently she cries in pain, then plunges his free hand underneath her dress and into her crouch.
The young girl is so frightened and so filled with guilt, she fails to tell her parents. Thus, these attacks continue for three and a half years at the country school. The girl’s parents have a dysfunctional marriage, and her favorite aunt is dying from cancer. Unfortunately, the young girl has a breakdown and ends up in a mental hospital for an entire summer.
Sexual harassment is not a wink, a casual kiss or a hug. It is a physical attack on a female (or male) who is not emotionally or physically strong enough to defend themselves.
It was a monster who nearly ruined my life many years ago in a little country school, where all I wanted to do was to walk in each day and learn.
CEDAR FALLS — There’s been a lot of criticism of our new president for his previous escapades. I think it’s called the human condition, but I’m not sure. There’s really only one person you can control, and if you think that’s not a full-time job you’re kidding yourself. I am old enough to remember Roosevelt, Kennedy, Clinton and probably more presidents who all had a similar known flaw that was sometimes made public.
You can either get over it and concentrate on the job you were hired do to, or make it a stumbling block to get in the way of everything they try to do. Your choice. Do you want the U.S. to succeed on the world stage or fail? The media has a lot to do with your presentation and seems to want failure. Maybe it has always been this way and I just don’t remember.
Unless you were born this morning, you probably have some things you would like to forget. And now more popular personalities are dropping like flies. Still the very best country in the world. Think of your own personal responsibility. Let him who is without sin throw the first stone.
WATERLOO — Now that the new and improved tax package has been approved and jammed down our throats, I have but one New Year’s resolution for 2018: to run out of cash and air at precisely the same moment.
A big thank you from this constituent goes out to my Republican congressman and both Republican senators, who routinely have my best interests at heart when it comes to their policymaking votes in Washington.
WATERLOO — We keep hearing, week after week, about Trump not making his taxes available to the public. This is a problem that is simple to solve. All that needs to be done is states to pass laws that anyone running for public office (including president of the United States) must reveal their tax returns before they are allowed to be placed on the ballot in that state.
I think this is an easy fix and would force hold outs to come forward. Would like to hear other views on this important subject.
JANESVILLE — Kudos to Janesville Fire and Rescue. On the evening of Dec. 22 they drove around the neighborhood playing great Christmas music and handing out gifts for kids and families. Thanks for all you do for us every year keeping us safe and for always being there when needed.
CEDAR FALLS — “So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
“And there were shepherds living in the fields nearby keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were afraid. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.’” Luke chapter 2.
May the peace of our Lord and Savior rest upon all of us in the coming new year.
WATERLOO — Why is it that budget deficits only matter when there is a Democrat in the White House? When Bill Clinton left office we had a record budget surplus. Under the Bush administration we got massive tax cuts combined with spending increases that turned the record surplus into a record deficit. Annual deficits actually decreased under Obama.
Now with our national debt around $20 trillion Trump and the Republicans just pushed through another round of tax cuts that will add trillions more to our national debt. World War I left Germany deeply in debt. This triggered hyperinflation causing a complete collapse of the German mark, making their currency virtually worthless.
If we don’t raise taxes and start paying down our debt it is inevitable the U.S. dollar will eventually collapse and become worthless too.
Striking a deal
NASHUA — To my Democratic friends, I don’t hate gay folks or any of those who classify themselves as minorities based on race, gender, etc. I won’t object to anything you do as long as you don’t expect me to pay for it or to be openly supportive. Live with and marry whomever you choose and expect to accept the consequences, both good and negative, without my help or approval.
I promise not to pass laws outlawing behavior if you will not pass laws requiring me to pay for or help those I don’t agree with. There are many of us out here who simply want not to be ignored because we don’t share your views and to be considered as American as you and you progressive friends.
The last election should have taught something to you. Quite frankly, after all the talking I don’t think you have really figured out what happened and how to connect with us. Maybe you should think about scaling back your demands for the progressive agenda to at least some figure proportionate to the actual electorate in the country. We also vote, you know?
