Time to wake up

RUSS GRILL

PARKERSBURG — Over the last month, the American people have been deluged by revelations of alleged (or actual) sexual improprieties in the areas of politics, entertainment and even sports.

Why are these revelations taking place now at such an alarming rate? Could it be that God is trying to speak to America?

Here are two observations from Scripture: 1) “... be sure that your sin will find you out.” (Numbers 32:23). This means that our sinful lifestyles will eventually come to light; they cannot be hidden. 2) “What is said in secret will one day be shouted from the housetops.” (Luke 12:2-3). Today our housetops are our public media, and they are shouting at us 24/7.

What is left to say? We still live in the age of grace. All of us can still turn to the one who was born at Christmas, who died on Good Friday, and who rose from the dead on Easter. He is our sin-bearer and savior; and he can still give us forgiveness and new life — individually and corporately.

God is speaking, America. And it’s time for us to wake up and listen.

What Chuck said

JOHN MULLEN

LA PORTE CITY — I don’t understand all the flap about what Senator Grassley told that commie fake newspaper, the Des Moines Register, when he was discussing that evil inheritance tax. That tax is pure evil, forcing thousands of hard-working family farms and business to be sold to pay taxes after a loved one has died. The fake news tells us that only 0.02 of a percent of estates are affected and only 60 family farms or small business throughout the country were affected last year. I just don’t believe them.

Chuck would not lead me wrong. He has nothing to gain from making a mountain out of a molehill, I think it all comes down to jealousy. Those commie liberals spend all their money on booze, women and movies. Hell, just do the math, if you entertained a very, very, very fine lady with a 24-pack of your favorite beer and took her to a movie every day, you would burn though $5.5 million in as little as 35 years. Of course, if the lady was not very, very, very fine and just fine it would take a little longer.

Wildlife act

DEBRA WARRENS

WATERLOO — As your constituent, I urge you to oppose S. 1514, the so-called “HELP for Wildlife Act.” This bill directs the secretary of the interior to strip gray wolves in Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin of federal protections and prevents judicial review, thereby ensuring that the rules removing Endangered Species Act protections in these three states (plus Wyoming) can never be challenged in court.

The Endangered Species Act calls for decisions regarding listing and delisting species to be made by scientists at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and specifically directs them to use the best available science. This bill does a legislative end run around the Endangered Species Act, weakening this extremely successful law that enjoys wide bipartisan support.

Further, S. 1514 would prevent any future regulation of lead fishing equipment under the Toxic Substances Control Act. The danger of lead in our environment to both humans and wildlife – including endangered species – is a matter of settled science. Preventing regulation of this toxic material is irresponsible and needless, especially when multiple economic alternatives exist to lead fishing equipment.

Please oppose S. 1514 to protect public health, our wildlife and the Endangered Species Act.
