Edna Nordstrom (1922-2004)

Edna Nordstrom, aged 81, of Evansdale, passed away on the morning of June 22, 2004, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, with her loving family by her side. It was only befitting, after all for she had stood beside them through all their trials and tribulations. Born on Aug. 30 1922, she was the daughter of John and Bertha Tiedemann Groothoff, and, at the time of her birth, it could not have been anticipated that she would live a life filled with so many emotions and unwavering hope.

On March 22, 1943, Edna married her cherished Fred in Nashua, Iowa. Edna would become a homemaker while Fred operated Nordstrom Sanitation Services. She was also known to take an occasional ride on the back of the truck from time to time. From this union, three children would be born. Mike (Kathe) Nordstrom, Linda (Roger) McBride, and Cathy (Steve) Wolf. Edna loved traveling to Disney World, Las Vegas, Germany, and other interesting places. She had become consumed in family, and in her husband she found a love that would exceed all expectations and that love would never die, even after his death on Feb. 23, 1995. Her spirit had been tested, but it would never be broken. Edna was very independent and sought new challenges that would occupy her days and nights.

Known affectionately by her great-grandchildren as "GG," Edna Nordstrom also became a great-great-grandmother earlier this year. Her passion was her children and grandchildren, but she had a not so secret enthusiasm for the arts. Edna was an active member of the Waterloo Arts Association and her paintings were proudly exhibited in a show in the Tea Room of the Black's Building in Waterloo. She was also the past president of the Green Thumb Garden Club. She loved music and would spend hours playing the organ, "if there was time, of course," and chose to play the organ in private, just in case the listener did know the actual notes that came from the music sheet.

Her life was her family, and although she did not seek fame and fortune, she found it in those hearts that loved her. She kept her "memory book" current with all the new additions to each family and taught herself computer skills so she could e-mail her brother and other family and friends. She enjoyed the Deuces Wild Poker machines at the casinos, but didn't care how much she spent on her last trip to Tama, because "It was Mike's money." More importantly than anything, she was never without her prayer book. Her faith was undoubting and was first and foremost.

Edna was preceded in death by her two brothers, Lloyd and Clarence Groothoff. She leaves her three children, 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and a great-great grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, with burial beside her loving husband, Fred, at Elmwood Cemetery in Waterloo. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway and also one hour prior to the service at the church.

For Edna Nordstrom, her life was one of accomplishment and fulfillment. Her life had come full circle and she has gone back to her Creator. For those of us who are left behind, she left us with memories of hope, respect, love and "Mom."
