WATERLOO, Iowa --- A Waterloo mother has been sentenced to prison for allegedly punching her 11-year-old son and striking him with an extension cord.

Monette Cheriee Oden, 30, was sentenced to 15 years in prison during a Monday hearing in Black Hawk County District Court. Oden will have to serve at least three years before she can be considered for parole.

She has until Jan. 2 to turn herself in to prison officials and begin serving her time.

A witness went to police after seeing the assault in an argument over shoes in February. Doctors discovered other injuries from earlier incidents, according to court records.

She was charged with felony child endangerment and misdemeanor child endangerment and pleaded guilty in August.

Oden has other child endangerment conviction from incidents in 2007 and 2010.

How sad is it that she was able to keep the kid after two other charges. She should have to spend the entire sentence, there is no way you can say she has no risk of repeating the offense.
