WATERLOO, Iowa --- A Waterloo man has been arrested for allegedly running over the foot of a store employee after his passenger took items from the business.

Barry Dwight Roatch, 40, of 3340 Bristol Road, was arrested July 28 for aggravated theft and assault in connection with the July 21 incident. He remains in jail with bond set at $10,000.

According to police, a loss prevention employee from Sears at Crossroads Center followed a woman who allegedly took $123 worth of merchandise from the store at about 7:30 p.m. She went to the parking lot and got in a silver Oldsmobile Alero.

When the worker approached the car and identified himself, the Alero driver yelled at him and stepped on the gas, according to police.

The car ran over the employee's left foot, and the side-view mirror struck his hip.

A witness later identified Roatch as the car's driver, court records state.

A quick check on Iowa Courts Online, reveals this is NOT his first brush with the law...
He's a question for discussion. What do you do with someone like this who has spent his life as a criminal? Rehab (if there is such a thing)? Jail time? Any thoughts out there?
