SIOUX CITY, Iowa --- A federal grand jury indictment unsealed Monday charges a Wall Lake, Iowa, couple with robbing four Northwest Iowa banks.

Jeffrey Schoon, 47, and Roxena Schoon, 40, both are charged in U.S. District Court in Sioux City with conspiracy to commit bank robbery, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a conspiracy, possession of a firearm and ammunition as a prohibited person and four counts of bank robbery.

Jeffrey Schoon pleaded not guilty Tuesday. Roxena Schoon is scheduled to be arraigned July 12.

The indictment, which was filed and sealed on June 19, alleges that the Schoons robbed Iowa State Bank in Odebolt on Dec. 29, Citizens First National Bank in Early on Jan. 11, Westside State Bank in Vail on Jan. 28 and Heritage Bank in Lytton on March 23. A total of $32,845 was stolen.

In each case, the indictment said, Jeffrey Schoon robbed the bank and his wife drove the getaway car.

Jeffrey Schoon is charged with using a handgun of unknown make and model to rob the Odebolt bank and a Molotov Cocktail in the Vail bank robbery. Since the last bank robbery, the Schoons had bought a .38-caliber handgun and ammunition.

A criminal complaint filed in June said that Jeffrey Schoon wore latex gloves, a surgical mask and a blue hooded sweatshirt during each robbery. Those items were found during a search of Roxena Schoon's car. A $20 bill from one of the banks and marijuana also were found during a search of their home on March 29.

As a result of that search, drug and weapons charges were filed against them in Sac County District Court. Both await trial on those charges.
