GIFFORD, Iowa --- A 31-year-old victim of a shooting died Monday morning at the hands of his father, according to the Hardin County Sheriff's Office.
Joshua Tremmel was reportedly arguing with his father, Larry Tremmel, 64, in a house the two men shared at 31525 285th St. near Gifford.
"Allegedly an argument started earlier in the morning between the two men and escalated in violence, resulting in Larry Tremmel retreating to another room in the home and getting a handgun," according to a statement released by Sheriff Timothy Smith.
Larry Tremmel fired one shot, striking his son in the chest. Joshua Tremmel was not armed, according to authorities.
Larry Tremmel called 911 to report the shooting and later told investigators he was afraid his son was going to kill him. The incident happened shortly before 10 a.m.
According to the sheriff's office, Larry Tremmel cooperated with officers and he was released to family members after questioning.
An autopsy was scheduled at the Iowa State Medical Examiner's Office in Ankeny. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and sheriff's office are investigating. They will forward their reports to County Attorney Randall Tilton for review of possible criminal charges.
