LIBERTY CENTER | Charges are pending against a semi driver who plowed into a construction zone in Warren County, killing a flagger controlling traffic.

Rubin Ward, 46, of Chicago, failed to stop but swerved to avoid hitting vehicles stopped on the road, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

Part of Ward's rig struck the flagger, Christopher Wheeler, 27, of Tama.

The incident happened about 3:30 p.m. Thursday on U.S. Highway 65 about a mile north of Liberty Center. The site is in Warren County south of Des Moines.

Law enforcement officials arrested Ward for leaving the scene of a fatal accident. He is in custody in Warren County.
