IONIA, Iowa — Alex Potratz, 17, a senior on the Nashua-Plainfield football team, died Tuesday morning after crashing a pickup in rural Chickasaw County.

According to school officials, Potratz was driving home from a junior varsity game Monday night in a Ford F150. He apparently lost control of the truck while traveling east on 220th Street, according to the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Office.

The vehicle went into a ditch and rolled.

The incident happened about 9:15 p.m. near Ionia.

Potratz was initially transported to Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton and then airlifted to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

The community, school and Potratz’ teammates stage a candlelight vigil Tuesday evening near the football field.

Three district counselors and clergy from the community will be at the high school today to assist students and staff members.
