WATERLOO — Waterloo Fire Rescue has received the 2018 emergency medical services award from the Iowa Emergency Nurses Association.

Fire Chief Pat Treloar, Lt. Jason Hernandez and medical director Dr. Christopher Hill accepted the award Tuesday in Des Moines.

The award recognizes WFR for innovation, education, compassion and collaboration with other local emergency departments. Kimberly Mueller, a registered nurse at UnityPoint in Waterloo, submitted the department for consideration.

Mueller cited the department’s medical training in sepsis alert, specialty patient education, going above and beyond in a specific trauma situation, community education involvement, and emergency department collaboration outside of the medical field.

“We are honored and grateful for the recognition given to us by the IENA,” Hernandez said. “The relationship we have with emergency nursing staff is critical to our ability to provide the highest level of care possible and we continue to learn from their expertise daily.”
