WATERLOO, Iowa --- Grout Museum District officials are seeking Black Hawk County’s help to repair its buildings.
Billie Bailey, the Grout’s executive director, asked the county Board of Supervisors Tuesday for money to help replace the Bluedorn Science Imaginarium roof and retrofit several fluorescent lighting fixtures through the district’s facilities.
The Imaginarium’s failing roof forced the building to close Thursday, Friday and Saturday when rain leaked through.
“The water was coming in like somebody was standing there with a garden hose,” Bailey said.
Roofers arrived Monday to being making repairs to the membrane roof.
The Grout board submitted a letter to the supervisors Jan. 8 asking for $11,900 in county funds to help repair the roof and lighting, estimated at $100,000. The Black Hawk County Gaming Association in March agreed to provide nearly $65,000 in casino revenue to help with the project.
County supervisors did not discuss the request at the meeting. But board chairman Frank Magsamen said the supervisors declined to provide county funds based on the original Jan. 8 request.
“We did address it during budget time,” Magsamen said. “It would be up to the board members whether we bring it back up.”
