RICEVILLE — A three-person race is shaping up in a special election to fill a seat on the Mitchell County Board of Supervisors.

The April 17 election for the 3rd District seat, which includes the towns of McIntire, Riceville, Stacyville and New Haven, is to fill the seat previously held by Shannon Paulus, who was appointed to serve as county treasurer.

The county auditor, treasurer and recorder had appointed Amanda Adams to replace Paulus. But residents filed a petition forcing a special election to fill the vacancy.

Mitchell County Democrats nominated Rita Dvorak as their candidate for the seat, while county Republicans nominated Steve Smolik for the position. Smolik had filed the petition calling for the special election.

Adams, who was already seated, also filed nomination papers to run as a “no party” candidate for the position.

There is still short a window for additional candidates to join the race.

Dvorak, of Riceville, attended the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls as an adult student, where she studied computer science and management. She currently works for Olmstead County in Rochester, Minn., in the field of information technology.

Adams, of Stacyville, served as her city’s representative on the Mitchell County Economic Development board and has worked a number of infrastructure projects, including new streets, as part of the Stacyville City Council. She works at Hemann Insurance.
