WAVERLY — The Board of Education has appointed Alisha Jensen to fill the open Director District 5 seat.
“She’s replacing Adam Folkerts because he moved out of the district he represented,” Superintendent Ed Klamfoth said after the meeting last week, noting he still lives within the boundaries of Waverly-Shell Rock Community Schools. Folkerts was first elected to the board in 2015.
He resigned at the end of the board’s last meeting Dec. 11. The board had to choose a replacement within 30 days or call a special election. The board decided it would appoint someone and placed a notice to that effect in a local newspaper.
Jensen was the only person within the director district who expressed interest in the seat, which represents a portion of the city of Waverly.
“We had some people that inquired, but no one in that district,” said Klamfoth. “She will serve until the next school board election.” Jensen can run for a full term in November 2019.
“I have children in the school district, that was my greatest interest,” said Jensen, of why she sought the seat. The Waverly-Shell Rock High School graduate is office manager at First National Bank’s Waverly West location. “Just a new opportunity.”
Jensen said she currently has no specific goals for her tenure “other than to gain further knowledge and see how the process works.”
Klamfoth believes she will be a good addition to the board.
“I think she will do her part to move the district forward,” he said. “I’m looking forward to her addition.”
