INDEPENDENCE — The Richard Riggleman Young Speech Coach Award has gone to Kate Miller, speech coach at Independence High School.
The Richard Riggleman Young Speech Coach Award was established by Richard Riggleman of Deloit to reward a second- or third-year IHSSA speech coach. Riggleman was an active IHSSA coach for more than 30 years and still remains active with the IHSSA. The award consists of $1,000 per year, renewable for two consecutive years, for a total of $3,000.
The profile of the recipient will reflect: a commitment to coaching speech, large group events, individual events, and/or debate; demonstrate excellence in coaching speech; and have past experience in high school or college speech activities.
Miller is in her third year of teaching-coaching at Independence High School. She is currently involved in managing IHSSA large group and individual events. Kate has been the Large Group coach for Independence High School for the past three years, and this year is taking over the Individual Events coaching also. In her first year she had several students advance to state contest and even all-state.
