INDEPENDENCE — Independence Community Schools’ new superintendent will receive the same salary as the district’s retiring leader.

The Board of Education on Wednesday approved hiring Russell Reiter, who has been superintendent of Oskaloosa Community Schools for the past eight years. He was given a three-year contract with an annual salary of $155,000 plus benefits. District finance director Laura Morine said that is the current salary of Jean Peterson, who is retiring at the end of June. Reiter will start the job July 1.

He was among 26 applicants for the job and three finalists who were interviewed for the position on Monday. Along with board interviews, the candidates met with more than 70 district staff and community members.
