WATERLOO — Hawkeye Community College’s Board of Trustees on Tuesday approved a $287,364 bid to replace much of the roof on Buchanan Hall.

Black Hawk Roof Co. of Cedar Falls submitted the lowest proposal among six firms that bid on the project. The second-lowest bid was $325,000 and the others ranged from $405,330 to $438,000.

When a $12,000 contingency allowance and 6 percent architectural fees are included, the project budget totals $304,606. Officials said that is still more than $145,000 below the $450,000 estimate.

Dan Gillen, Hawkeye’s chief financial officer, said project designers from Stuxture Architects worked closely with people in the roofing industry to come up with the estimate. So, it was surprising to get such a low bid.

“Needless to say, we’re really happy with the bid,” he added. “It was apparently a good environment to take bids at this time.”

The portion of the roof being replaced includes the entire building except Advanced Technology and Business Center additions completed in 2013. “It’s replacing (the roof over) all the old part of the building,” said Gillen, which totals 37,835 square feet. That roof dates back to 1991 and has reached the end of its useful life.

The project will be paid for using funds from Hawkeye’s facilities levy.
